The Author:  The Author Coach Roy Benson, MS, C.F.I., is renowned as a pioneer in heart rate training methods. A coach and exercise physiologist for 36 years, he has conducted hundreds of seminars and workshops on HRM principles. His popular Nike Running Camps have taught thousands of runners the essentials of heart rate based training. 

Plan Basics: This is the perfect plan for any runner who wants to implement a precision training plan based on heart rate. Benefit from Coach Benson's 36 years of coaching to set up your heart rate training schedule. The plan will create workouts for you based on your current fitness level, your goal race distance (800 meters to 10k), your experience level (beginner to elite), recent race performances, your resting heart rate, Max heart rate, and your goals..

Customized Training
For each category, it will create the perfect plan for you, based:
    • Running experience
    • Racing Goals
    • Maximum heart rate and Resting Heart Rate
    • Previous Race Times
    • Are you overtraining?

Each week, the program loads your calendar with the perfect mix of workouts - from easy runs to interval workouts - with heart rates and intensities calculated based on the runner's phase of training and workout performance.

For each workout, you will be given the specific distance, duration, heart rate (or effort) and pace. The program leads you through four different phases of training, including base training, endurance, racing, and peaking.

It lets you train for one important race, or an entire season of peak performances.

For each workout, the plan suggests the mileage, duration, heart rate, exertion level and pace to keep you in your perfect training zone! Every week, the plan evaluates your current performance level and adjusts your training based on your current times and heart rate. It then creates your next week of workouts based on your goals, training phase, and performance level.   Examples:

Beginning Fitness Runners

Adult Recreational Runners (5k, 10k)
Adult Competitive Road Runners (5k, 10k)
Adult Competitive Track Runners (distances of 800m to 10,000m)

High School Cross country runners
High School Track runners (distances of 800 meters up to 5k)

College cross-country runners
College Track runners (distances of 800 meters up to 10,000m)

Workout types: Long runs, Interval workouts (these vary based on your distance, and training intensity), Endurance runs, Heart Rate fartleks, Easy runs.

Special logic is included for non-competitive runners, so Coach Benson's plan is perfect for casual road racers and fitness runners as well as serious competitive runners.
